LARGE POND DEVELOPMENT, COLCHESTER

LARGE POND DEVELOPMENT, COLCHESTER

Our experienced team travelled to the outskirts of Colchester to transform a client-excavated site into a professionally formed and fully lined large pond. The project combined precision earthworks, specialist machinery and expert geomembrane installation to create a safe, durable and well-finished result.

Site Preparation and Assessment

The client had initially excavated the pond before engaging our team to complete the development. We transported an 8-tonne standard excavator to site and tracked it to the work area. Before reshaping could begin, we dismantled an existing waterfall and cleared the area for the main works.

Precision Earthworks and Bank Formation

Using a laser level, the team established the correct bank heights and identified that one bank was considerably higher than the others. Although the 8-tonne excavator was initially intended for the reduction work, the bank’s width and ground composition called for a more suitable machine. We therefore brought in our 2.5-tonne specialist excavator, fitted with wide steel tracks, to carry out the work safely and accurately.

Once the levels had been corrected, all banks were carefully reshaped and a shelf was formed to improve safety and provide a suitable planting zone. A key trench was then excavated around the full circumference of the pond in preparation for the underlay and geomembrane liner.

Underlay and Geomembrane Installation

Geosynthetic Technology supplied and installed the protective underlay and geomembrane liner. The liner seams were completed using modern welding techniques and thoroughly tested to confirm their integrity. The company then supplied and installed three rubber boots to accommodate the inlet and outlet pipes. Throughout the installation, our team remained on site to provide excavator support and any additional equipment required.

Finishing Works and Site Reinstatement

Following completion of the liner installation, we backfilled the key trench to secure both the liner and underlay. Topsoil was then delivered, distributed by excavator and carefully hand-raked to provide a neat finish around the pond.

With the earthworks and lining complete, all plant was collected. The immediate work area was left as neat and tidy as site conditions allowed. The finished pond now has accurately formed banks, a practical safety and planting shelf, and a professionally installed lining system designed for long-term performance.
